Sports Afield
Submitted By: C Dixon Dover PA:About fifteen years ago I had stopped subscribing to or reading outdoor magazines. The format and layout more resembled a catalogue than a magazine. A typical example would be, "as I awoke at dark thirty to the pleasant chimes of my alarm, available at Zeromart $4.99 I scoffed at the howling wind and rain, certain that my Oven Dry suit, Available from Bugaboo Outfitters $249" would keep me warm and dry". This would continue until the author had promoted every piece of free gear solicited from suppliers, then we would come to the free hunt. One wonders if any of those writers have ever seen a IRS form 1099.
I do have some experience as a basis for my critique, having hunted about twenty states, all the Canadian Provinces with the exception of Manitoba, Alaska and a representative sampling of African countries.
One day a free copy of Sports Afield arrived, must have been a slow day as I actually opened and looked through the magazine. What a pleasant suprise, there were stories layed out as stories, what a novel approach. I now pay for my subscription as well as some for friends and guides who are also friends. Kudos to all, don't change a thing. 5.0
