Submitted By: Robert Linn:There's no investment hype in Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine(other than the ads, of course). You'll read straightforward assessments of all kinds of investments and, as the boomers begin seriously facing retirement, there's extra emphasis on planning for that in almost every issue.
As with any source of investment advice, these articles should just be the start of your research when you find a compelling subject. In fact, I would go so far as to say you should NOT invest in anything talked about in national magazines, unless you've asked your broker first about the street perspective on the "opportunity." Not that there's any impropriety, it's just that hundreds of thousands of people are probably acting on the information, which may only temporarily increase the viability.
If you lease new cars every few years, the best issue is the one that charts all the current year automobiles (December?), with useful numbers on residual value (depreciation), insurance costs, mpg, etc. Another nice feature is the seemingly monthly rankings of mutual, stock and money market funds, as well as the best credit cards from the standpoint of fees, interest rates or rebate programs.
Bottom line: good coffee table, casual reading...ultimately my favorite of all the finance advice publications for the layman. 5.0
