Adoptive Families
Submitted By: Beth Anne Melkmann:Adoptive Families magazine is a must read for anyone who has adopted a child or is just starting the process. It is a bi-monthly publication that covers both international and domestic adoption.
In each issue, there are interesting columns from single moms, veteran parents, and first timers. These sometimes humorous and always heartfelt essays provide an invaluable source of information and insight into the world of adoption.
In addition, the News & Notes section provides international adoption updates (e.g., In China, The Hague convention on International Adoption will come into force on 1/1/06. The update goes on to explain what impact this will have on families who are in the process of adopting from China). This is particularly helpful to families who may just be starting the process and need more information about individual countries.
One of the best components of Adoptive Families is the Growing up Adopted section. This section focuses on developmental stages and is broken down by age (0-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12, and 13+). It addresses a wide variety of topics and is an incredible source of information. As a first time parent, I particularly enjoy reading about what to expect in nursery school and kindergarten.
Lastly, the Book Review section is wonderful. Every book recommended by Adoptive Families has been a worthwhile read. Some books are for adults and many others are for children. In the November/December issue, five picture books for children adopted from China are profiled. I bought every single one!
Without hesitation, I highly recommend Adoptive Families. It was recommended by my adoption agency and I read each issue from cover to cover. In fact, since my subscription started two years ago, I have saved every single issue! 5.0
